Instructions for #82400 Deluxe Decal Finishing Set

Applying decals properly is not difficult.
If you follow the four simple steps outlined here, you will obtain expert results.
Step One: Apply Clear Gloss

Although decals can be applied to almost any surface, the best results are obtained when they are applied to a glossy surface. Apply Clear Gloss to the surface of the model where the decal will be applied. A smooth coating produces the best results. Allow the Clear Gloss to dry overnight.

Step Two: Apply the decal

Cut the decal out of the sheet as close to the printing as possible so as to reduce the size of the film on which it is printed. Dip the decal (do not soak it) into a cup of water and place it on your worktable (printed side up) for one minute. This should be sufficient time for the decal to loosen from the backing paper without dissolving too much of the adhesive on the back of the decal film. Using a soft brush, apply Decal Setting Solution to the surface of the model where the decal will be applied. Next, gently slide the decal off the backing paper and into position on the model. Use the soft brush to gently move the decal into exact position, working out any large air bubbles that may have been trapped. Do not exert much force or the decal may wrinkle or tear. Apply decal setting solution to the decal surface again and let dry.

Hint:

When applying decals to a very irregular surface, be sure to leave a little "slack" in the decal film so that it can easily conform to the surface during Step Three. If the decal is stretched too tightly over surface features, the printing may distort during the softening process.

Step Three: Soften the decal

To make it look like it has been printed directly on the surface of the model, a decal must be softened so it will conform to all the details. Using a soft brush, gently apply Decal Softening (Solvent) Solution to the surface of the decal. Do not touch the decal until the solution has completely dried. Repeat the application of the Decal Softening Solution until the decal has fully conformed to the surface, but be sure to allow the solution to completely dry between applications; otherwise, you may damage the decal while it is still soft.

Step Four: Apply clear top coat

Depending on the desired finish, apply a clear top coat to the entire model...select either Clear Gloss, Clear Satin (Semi-Gloss) or Clear Flat. Applying with an airbrush produces the best results, but acceptable results can be obtained using a brush. Apply a second coat after the first coat has dried. After the second coat has dried, the decal lettering or artwork will appear to be printed directly on the model.

To restore old decals:

Use a soft brush to apply a continuous coat of Liquid Decal Film to the old decal and let dry for 15 minutes. Apply like regular decal.
