At the end of WWII, large areas of Europe were annexed or occupied by the Soviet Union, whose governing policies restricted the movement of civilians and communication networks in these areas. Due to the devastating nature of nuclear warfare, the collection of intelligence became imperative to the United States. As a result of a US Air Force design competition a new reconnaissance aircraft was born. The Lockheed Corporation developed the CL-282; capable of cruising at or above 70,000 ft and with the ability to penetrate deep into Soviet airspace. The design caught the attention of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), who added the U-2 designation to the CL-282 and nicknamed it “Dragon Lady”. The prefix “U” (utility) was used to disguise the plane's actual purpose of intelligence gathering, to a high altitude weather observation aircraft, as a cover.
AFV Club's plastic model kit in 1/48 scale captures all the intrigue and clandestinity surrounding this single seat, single engine, jet aircraft in it's USAF markings.
