The steam-powered 'Brooklyn' Tug was built in 1910 for the New York Dock Company. She was one of many railroad tugs designed to transfer railroad cars from one side of New York Harbor to the other on barges known as car floats. Railroad tugs towed a car float on each side, hence the heavy guards and use of single posts instead of H-bitts. Railroad tugs were characterized by long houses since there was no need for space aft.
