Meet Matthew McKeeby, Micro-Mark 2021 Modeler of the Year

Last year, Micro-Mark announced the second annual Model Challenge; a skill, detail and creativity-based contest which inspired builders far and wide to take any Scientific model kit and make it their own. The response was outstanding and we were truly impressed with the high-level craftsmanship and imagination that went into every creation.

After carefully evaluating all of the entries received, one stood out from the rest . . . not only for its exceptional build quality, but for its instantaneous WOW factor. Matthew McKeeby started with the Scientific Wharf District Kit Set and went to another dimension, channeling sci-fi master H.P. Lovecraft and adding his own unique spin on a tale of a monstrous sea creature's revenge.

When Micro-Mark CEO Chas Fox presented Matt with the coveted Modeler of the Year award, we had the chance to ask Matt some questions about his amazing contest-winning diorama and about the man who created it as well.

MM: How did you get started in model building?

Matt: I’ve been building since I was in the second or third grade and I remember my first kit was an Aurora Wolfman kit with a glowing head. Man, it was great! I had it by my bed every night.

MM: What do you plan on doing with the prize?

Matt: I am really going to work to organize my studio with some of the materials Micro-Mark offers, racks for paint, storage for tools . . . it's great!

MM: What are your favorite Micro-Mark products?

Matt: I’m a big fan of my new airbrush compressor, the MicroLux, which is fantastic, and all of the organizing tools which you offer.

MM: What was the inspiration behind this great model that you created?

Matt: I started with the bust of an old sailor and I imagined the story he might be telling. I filtered that through some H.P. Lovecraft ideas and the whole thing just came together organically.

MM: What's your next project?

Matt: I'm working on a French Lancer right now, and when I finish that, I’m going to be building "Glacier Girl," a P-38 that's trapped in a glacier.

MM: That is awesome! Thank you, Matt.
