Based on later modifications of a design first introduced in the 1970s, Amtrak purchased 86 coaches and 18 Food Service Cars with two different interior arrangements in 1989 and 1990 for use on inter-city runs. The Phase VI (or Phase IVb) livery with its wide window stripe and red reflective sill stripe was introduced in 2002, and is currently used on most passenger cars in service around the country.
