Built at the Altoona Shops industrial complex for Pennsylvania Railroad in 1911, DD-1s were semi-permanently coupled pairs of third rail direct current electric locomotives. They were designed to be operated on the then newly electrified rails in the North River tunnels between the Manhattan Transfer station in Hoboken New Jersey and Pennsylvania Station in New York City.

GHB's HO scale model is DCC equipped and features ESU LokSound 5, die-cast heavy frame, fly-wheel fitted motors on both units, detailed side rods, directional reversing headlights, Kadee compatible couplers, metal details and authentic painting and lettering. Minimum 18" radius curves.

The first DD1-class of locomotives were introduced into regular passenger service on November 27, 1910 to operate in the North River Tunnels under the Hudson River.
