Built in 1864 for the L&N Railroad, Baldwin's 2-6-0 locomotive, the largest of the times, got its nickname Mogul from Indian Muslims of the Mohammedan Empire. More than 11,000 Moguls were built between 1860 and 1910. They were primarily used in freight service, but possessed enough speed to pull lighter passenger trains.
